Outsourced internal audits · BRCGS

Independent internal audits for BRCGS sites.

Outsourced internal audits from a registered BRCGS auditor who also audits for certification bodies, so your internal audit programme is challenged properly rather than just completed.

Why it matters

Internal audits are the foundation.

Internal audits are the foundation of any food safety and quality management system. Strong, thorough auditing is what keeps that system robust, and it is often the first thing a certification auditor looks at to judge how well a site really manages itself.

Too often internal audits become a box-ticking exercise, carried out by people auditing their own work. An external auditor is never auditing their own work, brings a fresh pair of eyes and knows what good actually looks like — with the rigour to tell paperwork compliance apart from food safety controls that genuinely work.

What you get

Internal audits that hold up on audit day.

The aim is an internal audit programme your certification body can rely on, and one that actually improves the site rather than just generating paperwork.

  • Audits planned around your existing internal audit schedule, or help building a risk-based schedule from scratch
  • A proper challenge of your systems, records and what actually happens on the factory floor
  • Fabrication and hygiene inspections alongside the documented system
  • Clear, graded findings with root cause and practical corrective actions
  • A written report your team can use as evidence of a working internal audit programme
  • One-off cover during staff absence or a full ongoing programme across the year
Who’s behind it

Andy Burne, registered BRCGS auditor.

Nearly three decades in the food industry, carrying out subcontract audits for leading certification bodies since 2009. Practical, on-the-floor experience — not just a checklist.

"The value of an audit is not simply finding what is wrong. It is helping a business understand what needs to change — and why."

Common questions

Independent Internal Audits, answered.

Does an internal audit carried out by an external auditor still count for BRCGS?

Yes. BRCGS requires internal audits to be carried out by trained, competent auditors who are independent of the area being audited. An external auditor meets that requirement and brings a view your own team cannot give themselves.

How often should internal audits take place?

BRCGS expects a planned, risk-based programme spread across the year that covers the whole standard and your food safety system. Andy can cover the full programme or carry out specific audits within your existing schedule.

Will you audit against our own procedures as well as the standard?

Yes. Audits cover the requirements of the relevant BRCGS standard and check that your own procedures, HACCP plan and customer requirements are being followed in practice.

Can you carry out our certification audit afterwards?

No. BRCGS impartiality rules mean an auditor cannot carry out the certification audit at a site they have supported as a consultant. What you get instead is the mindset and rigour of an active certification auditor preparing your team before your certification body arrives.
